Teacher guide
Escape-room games such as SQL Island have proved a great way to make databases engaging. The Eskuel Suite takes this idea a step further: students design a database and create an escape-room game around it. The result is intensive practice with SQL—and, above all, a creative product that classmates can play.
The Eskuel Suite was originally designed for computer-science lessons in secondary schools. Lukas Convent documented its use for project work in detail in a 2024 paper, which is available in German: Download the shared PDF.
Ideas for classroom use
The SQL Game Console and SQL Game Editor can be used in many ways:
- Students practise SQL by playing supplied games.
- The teacher creates targeted exercises as an SQL game—for example, practice with
WHEREclauses. - The teacher supplies databases and students devise suitable SQL queries, record them as games and then play one another’s games.
- Student groups spend several lessons developing an original SQL game as a final project.
Multi-lesson final project
The project guide offers a detailed outline for using the suite in a multi-lesson final project.
